The current earthquake swarm at Yellowstone can now be called the longest and most eventful in modern history. I include the following snapshot from today's reports:

While the debate is raging whether the intensity of these quakes is being under-reported, the more important issue of depth of these quakes is being ignored. They have been closer and closer to the surface. Starting at about 15 kilometers deep a few weeks ago to an average of 5 kilometers deep today. From 10 kilometers deep on 1/27 to 5 kilometers deep today:

Because the resistance to pressure decreases as with the amount of mass between the the magma and the earth's surface, it would be safe to project an eruption in a matter of days, or a few weeks. What remains to be seen is the nature of this eruption and whether or not it will be localized or Biblical in proportion. Maybe something in between.

It is an area called The Geysers. This area is not unfamiliar to quake swarms. However, a recent escalation in magnitude has invited a heightened concern. A 4.2 magnitude quake occurred yesterday which is a triggering signal for seismologist to take note and monitor more closely.

美國加州6級地震房屋震動

美國 加州北部對開海域發生黎克特制6級地震，附近一帶居民表示感到房屋在晃動。

據美國地質勘探局報告，地震發生在當地時間4日中午12時20分（香港時間今日凌晨4時20分）左右，震中位於加州北部海岸線一帶，離西北部的彼得羅利亞小鎮約56公里，震源深度約11公里。

三藩市 有居民反映，地震發生時，他們感到房屋在晃動。俄勒岡州南部的居民亦感到震動。目前並無有關地震造成傷亡或損毀的報告。

今年1月9日，同一地區曾發生黎克特制6.5級地震，一些建築物受到一定程度損壞。

Although the earthquake that rattled parts of northwest Illinois early Wednesday morning did not come with disaster, it was a significant shake for the Midwest and one of only three in the region in more than two decades.

The 3.8-magnitude earthquake was reported by the U.S. Geological Survey at 3:59 a.m. It was centered in a farm near the city of Elgin, about 40 miles west of Chicago. The quake also was felt in Wisconsin, Iowa and at least four other states....

黃石公園超級火山若爆發　恐引發致命災難

（法新社華盛頓 16日電） 冰島火山爆發、造成歐洲空中大亂之際，專家說，黃石國家公園（Yellowstone national park）的「超級火山」若爆發，恐引發致命災難，但短期間內爆發的可能性並不大。

美國 地質調查所（US Geological Survey）火山學家柏頓（Bill Burton）說：「如果要猜黃石公園下次火山爆發是什麼時候，大概是好幾千年後。」

黃石公園火山因為威力強大，故有「超級火山」之稱。但是這個火山已經好幾萬年不曾爆發過。

上次黃石公園火山爆發是64萬年前，在這之前的另外兩次分別是130萬年前和210萬年前。

根據這個紀錄，該火山大約每73萬年爆發一次，表示未來90萬年內都不會再爆發。但是柏頓也指出，火山活動是說不準的。

他說：「你不能自以為是，洋洋得意地以為不會發生任何事。」

對火山學家而言，關鍵在於持續研究每一個火山的歷史。柏頓說：「我們越了解（一座火山）過去的活動，就越能掌握接下來會發生什麼。」

有些火山會規律的、每10年爆發一次，爆發前也會有火山不穩的徵兆。其他的火山則會好久好久都不爆發。

專家會檢視一個火山的爆發史，也會用探測技術和全球定位系統（GPS）在內的科技，來偵測火山是否因岩漿的壓力而出現「腫脹」現象。

儘管黃石公園的火山近期不太可能爆發，但一旦爆發，後果將不堪設想。

黃石火山上一次約64萬年前爆發的時候，噴出的火山灰和火山岩達約1000立方公里遠，遍及美西、美中，最南甚至達墨西哥。威力較1980年的聖海倫斯火山（Mount Saint Helens）爆發，還要強約1000倍。（譯者：中央社賴秀如）
