Russia awaits Bulgaria's explanation for its stated plan to join the new US missile system in Europe, Russia's top diplomat declared.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has criticized the US for including Bulgaria in its missile system, describing it as an unpleasant surprise.
"I repeat that we are waiting for detailed explanations, which have been promised to us," RIA Novosti quoted Lavrov as telling reporters upon arrival in Nicaragua for a state visit.
"We have already questioned our US partners in Washington through our ambassador as to the meaning of this, and why we have this Bulgarian surprise after the Romanian surprise," he added in reference to an earlier US-Romanian scheme of a similar nature.
The official's Saturday remarks come a day after Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov showed interest in hosting America's planned interceptor missile system for the European Union, if approved by the EU.
Romania has already announced its intentions to host the US ballistic missile interception program, a move that has drawn Kremlin's ire.
Moscow views the American missile system as a threat to its national security.
The original US missile shield plan, which was shelved last September, sought to station components of the missile system in Poland and the Czech Republic.
