Ahead of talks with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, French President Nicolas Sarkozy says France will not to allow debt-ridden Greece to "fall."
"One cannot allow a country in the eurozone to fall. If one does not support Greece, because it is making efforts, it was not worth introducing the euro," AFP quoted Sarkozy as saying on Saturday.

Papandreou had held talks with another European heavyweight, German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday, who said Athens currently did not need financial aid and the eurozone's stability was "assured."

This is while Greece has passed a set of unpopular austerity measures that foresee public sector salary cuts and a pension freeze for both public and private sector workers.

"The sacrifices will have results," Prime Minister George Papandreou said on Saturday in remarks defending the measures.

"Three years from now, public finances will be in order and we will have restructured and modernized the administration," he claimed.
