Cigarette butts can protect steel
Thu, 13 May 2010 17:47:08 GMT
A new study conducted by Chinese scientists has shown that some chemical extracts from cigarette butts can be used to protect steel pipes from rusting.
After immersing cigarette butts in water, researchers found nine chemicals, including nicotine and applied the extracts to N80, steel used in oil pipes, Reuters reported.
According to the study published in the American Chemical Society's bi-weekly journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, the extracts protected the pipes from rusting.
"The metal surface can be protected and the iron atom's further dissolution can be prevented," the authors wrote.
Oil pipe corrosion costs millions of dollars every year and 4.5 trillion cigarette butts, containing enough toxins to kill fish, find their way into the environment each year.
"Recycling could solve those problems, but finding practical uses for cigarette butts has been difficult," the paper said.
With 300 million smokers, China is the world's largest smoking nation and consumes one-third of the world's cigarettes.
