TONY EASTLEY: A leading professor and physician in infectious diseases says early clinical trials revealed there were potential problems with Australia's flu vaccine.
托尼伊斯特利:一位領導的傳染性疾病教授和醫生說,早期的臨床試驗顯示澳洲的流感疫苗有潛在問題。
All seasonal flu vaccinations were recently suspended after almost 300 children who had flu shots suffered side effects.
所有季節性流感疫苗注射最近都暫停,在近300名接受流感疫苗注射的兒童遭受副作用後。
Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Australian National University Peter Collignon, says clinical trials uncovered issues with the flu vaccine.
澳洲國立大學傳染病教授彼得科尼翁說,臨床試驗揭發流感疫苗的問題。
But Australia's chief medical officer Professor Jim Bishop disagrees. He says the clinical trials Peter Collignon refers to are unrelated.
但澳洲的首席醫療官吉姆畢曉普教授不同意,他說彼得科尼翁所指的臨床試驗是無關係的。
Liv Casben reports:
LIV CASBEN: Last week the seasonal flu vaccination programme was suspended for children under five, because of health concerns. But Professor Peter Collignon from the Australian National University says - well before that - there were signs something was wrong.
PETER COLLIGNON: The early warning signs were in the original studies by the vaccine manufacturer, CSL, in children, that was published in January in a journal called JAMA and this looked at about 370 children who were vaccinated last October with the swine flu vaccine.
And what was surprising is particularly young children under the age of three. About 35 per cent of those developed a fever when they were given the lower dose of the vaccine.
LIV CASBEN: Why did the Government insist on rolling out the vaccination programme then if clinical trials showed there were problems?
PETER COLLIGNON: Well I'm not sure how this, you know, whether this was all appreciated, I guess our regulator would know that - the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration).
LIV CASBEN: Around 50 children in Western Australia have suffered side effects after being vaccinated against the seasonal flu. With almost 300 suspected cases across Australia. Professor Collignon says part of the problem lies with an inadequate monitoring system.
PETER COLLIGNON: The trouble is we go from having fairly intensive clinical studies by companies such as CSL and then there's no further evaluation other than a voluntary reporting of the most severe affects.
LIV CASBEN: He says there needs to be much better surveillance.
PETER COLLIGNON: Well, I think the surveillance system for this particular thing was less than adequate. I mean, at least we do know that we've had a lot of adverse reactions around Australia and particularly the information that has come from Western Australia.
But, one of the real problems is we've rolled out this vaccine without even really knowing how many doses of the vaccine have been given let alone how many side affects people have had; and I do think that we needed to do a better job than what is being done with this vaccine so that we make sure we keep the confidence in the general public.
LIV CASBEN: Australia's chief medical officer Professor Jim Bishop says the investigation into the vaccine in question - is still underway.
JIM BISHOP: We're not convinced that the seasonal flu vaccine is responsible for the cases that have been quoted yet.
LIV CASBEN: He says the clinical trials Professor Collignon is referring to are completely unrelated.
JIM BISHOP: That was a trial of the swine flu vaccine. The swine flu vaccine has now been used in millions of children. We haven't seen high fever rates.
LIV CASBEN: Professor Bishop says Australia's surveillance system is highly effective and that the cases in Western Australia prove that.
TONY EASTLEY: Liv Casben reporting.
